Save Your Dental Implants, Without Surgery

While the vast majority of dental implant procedures go perfectly smoothly, it's true that dental implant complications do sometimes occur. Implants can get infected in the same ways that teeth can encounter certain periodontal diseases. The good news is that LAPIP infected implant treatment provided by Dr. Amin Samadian, a leading dentist in San Francisco, can treat implant infections quickly and easily.

What Is LAPIP Infected Implant Treatment?

Advanced laser technology enables Dr. Samadian and his team to accomplish this without any physical cutting or incisions, so you can enjoy impressive results with little to no downtime or recovery period.

In addition to removing any trace of the infection, LAPIP also incites gum tissue restoration so you can enjoy a full and complete rehabilitation of your overall sense of dental health.

Reasons for LAPIP Infected Implant Treatment

If you have peri-implantitis, a bacterial infection that causes the gum and bone structure around a dental implant to become inflamed, Dr. Samadian and his team may suggest LAPIP. The most common symptoms of this condition are:

  • Red and tender gums around the implants
  • Noticeable discharge at the implant site
  • Severe swelling
  • Pain when biting down
  • Changes in gum color
  • Bleeding when brushing your teeth

What Does LAPIP Infected Implant Treatment Involve?

Dr. Samadian’s team will conduct a comprehensive exam to determine the severity of the infection. If antibiotics won't effectively treat your infection, LAPIP will be the best alternative.

Using a cutting-edge PerioLase® laser, Dr. Samadian will target the bacteria that leads to periodontal disease, healing the soft tissue around your implant and reconstructing the bone tissue.

You can expect your LAPIP procedure to be completed in just one or two treatments, compared to the multiple treatments you would need if you opted for a traditional surgical procedure.

Effective, Pain-Free Treatment for Infected Implants

One of the greatest perks of the LAPIP infected implant treatment is that it’s practically pain-free. It is minimally invasive and doesn’t involve any scalpels, cutting, or sutures. If you do experience any distress after the treatment, over-the-counter pain relievers usually are enough to help. The LAPIP infected implant treatment can preserve your dental implants and prevent serious dental developments from occurring in the future. What Peri-Implantitis Is

Peri-implantitis is inflammation of the gum around an implant combined with loss of the bone that holds it. It is the most common reason implants fail years after they were placed successfully. It is usually painless until it is advanced, and the bone it destroys does not grow back by itself, which is why it is worth treating as soon as it is found.

Its early stage, peri-implant mucositis, affects only the gum, with bleeding and swelling but no bone loss, and is reversible with cleaning and better home care.

Warning Signs

See a dentist promptly if you notice any of these around an implant:

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing around the implant
  • Pus, a bad taste or a persistent bad smell
  • Gum that is red, swollen or receding, or metal starting to show
  • Deepening pockets, measured at checkups
  • Bone loss on X-rays, or an implant tooth that feels loose

How It Is Treated

The aim is to clean the contaminated implant surface, stop the infection, and, where the shape of the bone defect allows, rebuild lost bone. Depending on the case, treatment may combine:

  • LAPIP®: a laser protocol using the same PerioLase® laser as LANAP to treat the infected tissue around the implant
  • Surgical decontamination of the implant surface
  • Regenerative grafting with bone graft, membranes, PRF or growth factors where the defect has walls to hold them (see Guided bone regeneration)
  • Soft-tissue grafting to thicken thin gum around the implant (see soft-tissue grafting)
  • Adjusting a crown that is hard to clean or overloaded

When an Implant Can't Be Saved

If bone loss is advanced or the implant is loose, the honest answer may be to remove it, rebuild the bone, and place a new implant once the site has healed. Dr. Samadian will tell you which situation you are in and why.

Preventing It Coming Back

Peri-implantitis is closely linked to plaque, smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and a history of gum disease. After treatment, regular professional maintenance, every three months at first, and careful daily cleaning around the implant matter more than anything else. Do not stop any medication prescribed by your physician, including immunosuppressants, without talking to them first.

LAPIP Infected Implant Treatment

Dental implants can sometimes encounter issues just like normal teeth. If you’re experiencing implant complications, LAPIP is an advanced laser treatment that can resolve your issues and save decaying your implants without painful surgery.

What Does LAPIP Infected FAQ

Can peri-implantitis be cured?

It can often be controlled and, in suitable defects, some lost bone can be regenerated. Treatment success depends on how much bone has been lost, the shape of the defect, and ongoing maintenance. Advanced cases may need the implant replaced.

Is peri-implantitis painful?

Usually not until it is advanced, which is why it is often found at a checkup or on an X-ray rather than because it hurts.

What is LAPIP?

LAPIP (laser-assisted peri-implantitis procedure) uses the PerioLase laser, the same laser used for LANAP, to treat infected tissue around an implant while preserving the implant and surrounding tissue.

Can bone grow back around an implant?

In some defects, yes, with regenerative grafting after the implant surface is decontaminated. Bone does not regrow on its own, and wide, shallow defects respond less predictably.

My implant was placed elsewhere. Can you treat it?

Yes. Bring or send the implant details if you have them, along with X-rays. Out-of-town patients can have their records reviewed first.
